The Headliners: Indie Horror Photography Hits NYC Streets

Greetings, fearless wanderers! Welcome to the Indie Games Tavern, where we spotlight the boldest indie adventures for thrill-seekers. Today, we’re zooming in on The Headliners, a co-op horror gem from GFA Games & Health Forge that stormed Steam on January 29, 2025.

This isn’t your typical indie game. Picture New York City overrun by monstrous creatures—where you and up to seven daring journalists risk life and lens to capture the ultimate headline shots. As your trusty tavern scribe, I’ve navigated the shadowed alleys to bring you a full review—story, graphics, sounds, gameplay mechanics, and yes, even bugs. Grab your camera, steady your nerves, and let’s dive in.

What Is The Headliners?

Imagine the Big Apple crumbling under a tide of claws and shadows. You’re a journalist, armed with nothing but a camera, thrust into co-op horror chaos alongside 1–8 teammates. The goal? Capture the perfect photo of the carnage—without becoming the next headline yourself.

Developed by the indie duo GFA Games & Health Forge, The Headliners blends exploration, photography, and pulse-pounding tension into a brew unlike anything else. Your game loop is a thrill: scour abandoned buildings, snap shots of aliens (or your friends’ grisly fates), and escape to cash in your press cards. Each run consumes a card, making every decision high-stakes. Horror fans and co-op crews alike will feel the rush—the headlines don’t write themselves!

Story: Survival Through the Lens

The Headliners doesn’t rely on a heavy narrative, but its premise sets the stage perfectly. New York is under siege by mysterious creatures. You’re no hero—you’re a journalist chasing fame, capturing the apocalypse for clicks. The story emerges through the chaos: shattered streets, cryptic graffiti, and the screams of teammates as the city falls apart.

Early chatter on X praises this minimalist approach. “It’s all vibes, no exposition,” one player noted. The game lets you piece together the invasion’s mysteries through your photographs. Was it an alien experiment gone wrong? A cosmic curse? The Headliners invites imagination, letting each snapshot tell a story.

Gameplay Mechanics: Click, Run, Repeat

The heart of The Headliners is its gameplay. You spawn with a camera, exploring and photographing headline-worthy chaos—aliens, wrecked taxis, or the last stand of a teammate. Survive and escape to review your shots, earning upgrades and press cards along the way. The game’s co-op shines when teammates split tasks: lure creatures, frame perfect shots, or cover each other during narrow escapes.

Exploration is tense and addictive. Every alley or abandoned building could hide your next big shot—or your doom. Solo runs feel less frantic, but the risk-reward tension remains compelling. Do you snap the alien close-up or bolt for safety? The game keeps that thrill alive every run.

Graphics: A Gritty New York

Visually, The Headliners opts for a gritty, low-fi aesthetic—think Dead Space meets grainy newsreels. Streets glow with flickering neon, creature designs lean grotesque, and shadows make every corner a potential jump scare. While textures aren’t ultra-sharp, lighting and atmosphere more than compensate, creating a tense, immersive horror playground. Some may wish for crisper visuals, but the indie charm is undeniable: raw, moody, and ready to spook.

The Verdict: The Headliners delivers a unique co-op horror experience that fuses photography, exploration, and tension into a chaotic, thrilling adventure. It may lack AAA polish, but for indie horror enthusiasts, it’s a must-play—and a perfect canvas for those who love storytelling through snapshots.
