Oh Deer Game Review
Oh Deer Game Review

So, there’s this new game called Oh Deer that came out on March 15, 2024, and man, it’s a total trip. You’ve got up to four players controlling deer trying to avoid getting hunted by one player who’s the hunter. Each round, one of you gets randomly picked to be the hunter, and then you switch it up again next round. You keep going until you decide to stop.
The deer try to blend in with NPC deer by moving and acting like them — walking around, pretending to munch on grass and all that. But here’s the catch: deer have a hunger meter and need to eat mushrooms scattered around or their stomach starts growling loud enough to give away their spot to the hunter. So you gotta stay sneaky and fed.
The hunter’s got a sanity meter too. If it hits zero, the game switches to night mode and all the deer turn into these scary, fast wendigos trying to take out the hunter before they make it to a safe cabin. The hunter loses sanity over time and loses a big chunk if they shoot a non-player deer, but they gain some back by catching player deer. Hunter wins by hunting down all the deer.
It’s kind of like other hide-and-seek style games, but with some fast-paced, clever twists that made it super fun when we played with four people. Plus, you can tweak almost everything in the settings — like giving the deer a boost if they feel weak or making the hunter even more deadly. That flexibility really helps keep the game fresh for future sessions.
When we played, the deer had the upper hand most rounds, but hunters definitely had their moments. Since there’s no leaderboard or stats, it feels way more casual and just plain fun — not some sweaty competition. Also, the game has this silly “fart” mechanic, so you know it’s not trying to be serious.
The graphics are super charming — kind of cartoonish, with simple shapes for trees and stuff, but it looks polished and not cheap at all. The NPC deer do a great job helping you blend in, so it’s not frustrating trying to hide. I’ve played hide-and-seek games where seekers win too easily or the game feels unbalanced, but here, once you’re out, you’re out — no second chances. Plus, dead deer get a free-fly camera to watch the rest of the game, which is a cool way to stay involved.
Now, the night phase is wild. If the hunter runs out of sanity before catching all the deer, the forest gets dark, the deer transform into scary wendigos with glowing red eyes and super fast attacks, and it turns into a frantic chase. It’s a crazy, fun twist that shakes things up.
Overall, Oh Deer totally delivers as a fun, easy-to-pick-up game that’s great for laughs and tense moments with friends. There’s not a ton of content — only a couple maps and some cosmetics — but for $9.99, it’s a solid buy if you want a goofy multiplayer experience.
