Zoochosis Game Review

Zoochosis

Zoochosis calls itself a “bodycam horror simulation game,” and honestly, that’s not totally wrong. But when I played about an hour and a half on my stream. It wasn’t scary in my opinion.

Zoo Life… With a “Horror” Twist

You play as a new zookeeper on your first day, getting a tour of this clearly messed-up facility. The place is grimy, they lock you in overnight, and at one point, a human body in a body bag gets dumped into a grinder to turn into animal food — and my character just kind of shrugs it off. Same with the first “jump scare”, which didn’t even happen until like 50 minutes in. I spent a lot of time clumsily driving a little train back and forth between animal pens, waiting for something to go wrong, but instead I just ended up petting a sick giraffe and checking penguins’ temperatures.

When a monster finally attacked me, my character fought it off and then went right back to doing zoo stuff like nothing happened.

Maybe the “psychosis” part of Zoochosis is that your character never reacts to any of the crazy stuff around them — like it’s all just normal. The trailer shows some wild things like a kangaroo puking out of its mouth-stomach, a hippo that looks straight out of Dark Souls, and a zebra with teeth where its butt should be. I wish I’d seen any of that during my demo, which felt like it spent way too long trying to act normal before going full weird. Like, come on — it’s called Zoochosis, we know it’s going to get nuts, so let’s get to it!

What I Think About Zoochosis

But I get it, pacing is tricky in horror games. You can’t just throw you into a zebra with a mouth for an ass right away. A zoo that creepy wouldn’t let you tell a story about a normal guy slowly losing it. I’m just not sure Zoochosis really has a handle on that story. Hopefully, the final game moves faster once they add stuff to it. Also, I’m kind of worried the “simulation” stuff — like feeding animals, taking their temps, and vaccinating them — might get boring after a while.

Still, it’s a cool idea, and maybe there’s a perfect audience out there who loves horror but also wants to make sure their penguins get exactly 14 kilos of food between monster attacks.
