7 Days Blood Moons Review – A Promising Spin-Off Held Back by Technical Issues

7 Days Blood Moons Review

7 Days Blood Moons is a spin-off of the popular 7 Days to Die franchise, aiming to deliver a faster-paced, competitive multiplayer experience. Players alternate between two roles: survivors scrambling to loot, build defenses, and endure relentless waves of undead, and a zombie mastermind who strategically deploys hordes to overwhelm them. Blending FPS and RTS elements with a stylized, Borderlands-inspired art style, the concept is ambitious and, at times, genuinely fun.

Unfortunately, while the foundation shows promise—particularly in the zombie master role—the execution leaves much to be desired. The game is held back by major technical and design issues, including long matchmaking times, poor optimization, unreliable hit registration, and a general lack of onboarding for new players. With a very small active player base, even accessing multiplayer matches can be difficult. Frequent bugs, crashes, and questionable monetization choices further contribute to the feeling that the game is unfinished and unpolished. At its current state, many players recommend waiting for future updates before jumping in.

Highlights

The core gameplay loop of looting, building, and surviving zombie waves is widely praised, successfully condensing the 7 Days to Die experience into shorter, more intense matches. The zombie master mode stands out as a highlight, offering a strategic and engaging twist that rewards thoughtful planning. While divisive, the stylized art direction is distinctive and appeals to certain fans. Players also appreciate the developers’ active engagement with the community and their willingness to respond to feedback. Unlockable weapons and progression systems add some depth and provide motivation for continued play.

Criticisms

Performance issues dominate player feedback, with frequent crashes, long load times, and lag spikes reported even on high-end systems. Combat can feel frustrating due to inconsistent hit registration, while the lack of a tutorial or clear explanations leaves new players confused about core mechanics. Matchmaking is another major pain point, as the small player base results in long waits or an inability to find matches—particularly for the zombie master role. Many players also describe the gameplay as repetitive and grind-heavy, citing limited building options and unbalanced difficulty that often favors the zombies. On top of that, the monetization model draws criticism for overpriced cosmetic items that are little more than recolors, along with a slow grind for in-game currency.
